For the last two weeks in Kenya, we have gotten some new opportunities here at Eden’s Hope. Some of them are school ministry, painting the classrooms, leading staff Bible study, devotional with pregnant moms, and so much more.
During this time, we all got the chance to step into our giftings and bless our ministry through it. Amanda got to step into accounting, Ava got to paint classrooms, Sarah got to bake with the women, Areonah got to help with many things but mainly painting, and I got to go to school ministry and help where needed.
School ministry was really fun and played right into my love for teaching. We got to go to the school that Eden’s Hope partners with and help run a program. This looked like gathering all the students in the courtyard and singing/dancing wih them. Then after that they went into their classrooms and we taught them a Bible lesson. After the Bible lesson we feed them lunch which typically was rice and lentils. Eden’s Hope goes to the school once a week (every Wednesday) to run their school ministry program. It was such a blessing to be able to experience this ministry and to be able to pour into the kids through Chris at the school.
We also got to help with the devotional for the pregnant teen moms every Tuesday which was such a blessing to be with a small group of women and be able to share the Bible with them. This group meets with each other to do a devotional, be educated, and to just be support for each other. It was such a beautiful time and it filled me up as much as I hope it feel the women up.
The last thing that I will talk about from Kenya is the opportunity we got to do house visits. We went to a part of Nairobi called Kibera which is the largest slum in Africa. We went there with staff members from Eden’s Hope and got the opportunity to visit two families that are apart of Eden’s Hope. The first person we got to see was the mom of one of the kids that is sponsored for school fees through Eden’s Hope sponsorship program. This women is currently battling cancer and has been going through a hard time because of it so it was really encouraging to be able to enter her home and just uplift, encourage, and love on her through Jesus. The other person we went to visit volunteers at Eden’s Hope and we got to visit his home and hear part of his story. His daughter was in the hospital due to an infection in her blood and a mass. The doctors were testing her for cancer and giving her treatment. They ended up finding out that she didn’t have cancer (Praise God). But while his wife was at the hospital with their daughter there was a fire at their home and they ended up having to get rid of some things. So all around they were having a tough time. It was a good opportunity to get to encourage and uplift him in this hard time. These house visits were hard but at the same time gave us a better insight into what people are living like and walking through in Kenya.
I loved being a part of the Eden’s Hope family for the short time that we were there. It truly was like walking into a family. All the volunteers and staff have such big hearts and care for not only each other but also the kids with so much love. This ministry was hard to leave and I miss it a lot. I hope to return and volunteer again one day.
